Power and energy distribution in Ethiopia, for the most part is under the control of the Ethiopian electric power corporation(EEPCO), on the transmission and distribution of electrical energy through the Integrated National Grid System. However, investors interested in the sector, are allowed to carry out transmissions of power and energy Off-Grid.

Ethiopia also known for its geographical highlands and very cool climates in various parts of the country is also very suitable for the implementation of wind mills/wind farms for generating power and energy.

Studies show that the actual capacity and potential of Ethiopia for generating power from geo-thermal sources is about 5,000 MW. This potential together with the geographical conditions of the country provide a very attractive opportunity for foreign and private investors interested in the power generating sector.

Ethiopia has vast hydro-power resources. Its hydro-power potential is estimated at being around 45,000 MW. The topographic features of the country allow at least 20 - 25 % of this potential to be utilized economically.

In fossil energy resources, there are significant opportunities in the exploration for oil and natural gas in the four major sedimentary basins, namely the Ogaden, the Gambella, the Blue Nile and the Southern Rift Valley.
